Dr Bob Docherty, QFSM, PhD, CEng, MEI, FIFireE, FIFSM (Life)
Bob Joined the UK Fire Service in 1968 in Blackpool. He started his own business in 2001 after a career that stretched over 33 years, the last 13 of those being in Strathclyde as Assistant Firemaster at first as Director of Operations and for over 10 years as Director of Fire Safety.
Bob has also been an active member of the Institution of Fire Engineers and has served on its International Council for over 21 years taking a particular interest in examinations and education. He was made International President of the Institution of Fire Engineers for 1999/2000 and travelled widely throughout the world in this role.
Bob started his academic achievements through the Open University and gained a First Class BA Honours degree which he followed with a Doctorate on the study of stress and coping in firefighters. He is also a Chartered Engineer. Bob was honoured in the New Years Honours in 2001 with the award of the Queen’s Fire Service Medal for his contribution to the Fire Service.
Bob also chaired the CACFOA Fire Safety Technical Committee (Scotland) and was involved in ensuring that this committee works towards a Scottish perspective in all matters relating to fire safety in its future involvement with the new Scottish Parliament. In this capacity, he also acted as an advisor to various other national Committees, e.g. BASIS, Association of District Councils, BS committees etc. He was also a nominated advisor on the Scottish Building Standards Committee (BSAC) and to COSLA as well as a member of the BSAC Fire Safety Sub Committee.
In an international capacity he has been a member of the Underwriter’s Laboratories Fire Council (based in the USA) for the last 11 years.
He has delivered many papers at conferences and seminars throughout the world including a Fire Safety paper at the 'Fire Frontier 94' Conference in Tokyo, the 1995 Hong Kong Fire Conference and the 1998 NFPA conference in the USA. He also delivered Fire Safety Risk Assessment papers at international conferences in Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Brunei, USA and Australia. Bob continues to contribute articles to many technical journals and he has written the book ‘Airports and Aircraft, Fire Protection, Firefighting and Rescue Techniques’.
Bob continues to be active in the field of fire safety/engineering and is the President for the Institute of Fire Safety Managers. He is also involved in the education of fire safety engineers in the UK and abroad, especially at a higher educational level, and he sits on various committees that are linked to this subject. He is also a verifier and contributor to training in industrial fire brigades through JOIFF and also lectured to the MSc course in fire safety engineering at the University of Central Lancashire with particular reference to Qualitative Risk Assessments.

A senior manager in property, construction and estates management functions for public and private owners and occupiers. A Chartered Building Surveyor and Town Planner with 40 years’ experience in consultancy and public sector organisations, delivering property related programmes and projects. Excellent at communicating with customers and stakeholders and in delivering projects successfully in a business-like manner.
- Leadership: A leader who is skilled in coaching and building teams of professional, technical and administrative staff to deliver outcomes for organisations.
- Property Management: A Chartered Surveyor who can effectively service the management of corporate property through due diligence, asset management planning, improving statutory compliance, building surveys, landlord and tenant and facilities management services.
- Strategic Programme Management: An experienced manager of building condition surveys, providing strategic and policy advice on planned maintenance and reinvestment in property portfolios. Experienced in collaborative working across a variety of public and private organisations.
- Project Management: A practitioner experienced in delivering many and varied refurbishment, retrofit and new build construction projects often in occupied premises.
